Icthyosis is an inherited condition that consists of continuously dry and scaly skin. It looks like dermatitis but has no itch or inflammation.
Many types of Icthyosis exist and the most common is Icthyosis Vulgaris.
The problem becomes worse with age and can flare up especially in cold winter weather. It is especially common on the legs and the scales can be quite large almost looking like paving.
Treatment is long term but excellent results can be simply obtained. However applying our Lavender Face and Body Balm before and after entering a pool can still allow you to enjoy these simple pleasures if you are careful to apply plenty of balm before and afterwards.
Our Lavender Face and Body Balm is ideal to treat Icthyosis in ALL its forms.
If you have allergies to fragrances then use the Hypo-Allergenic Face and Body Balm. The secret to success is frequent application about 3 times a day and more thickly at bedtime. The Balm is somewhat greasy which is essential to provide a barrier to prevent your skin drying out.
You should always have enough on the skin to see a very slight shine, it also makes the scales more transparent so the problem is much less visible to others. Reapply when the shine disappears. Icthyosis responds very quickly to this product and excellent results will be seen within 14 days.
Hi, We have had quite good results with icthyosis where the skin looks like scales, sort of a dry, scaling effect which may or may not be itchy.
Our Hypoallergenic Balm is good if itch is not a problem as it moistens the skin and contains propylene glycol which helps reduce the scale and hold moisture within the skin. We originally formulated the balm for children so it is non-toxic and can be applied anywhere, even the lips. It is odorless and colourless. You would apply it after a shower/bath and at least 3 times a day. Applying it a little more thickly at bedtime allows it to be absorbed overnight. You apply enough balm to leave a slight shine on the skin. The problem usually improves a lot but may need on going maintenance use of the balm.
In the case of itchy icthyosis we have a product called Psorexederm Ointment which is applied at night and the hypoallergenic balm is applied during the day. The psorexederm ointment has a soft base and contains coal tar so does have a coal tar odor but relieves the itch immediately.Including fish oil in the diet can also help to a mild degree.
You will see a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the skin and the products are safe to use. I hope this helps. Kind Regards, David Hosking.
