Subject: Dermatitis of the scalp
Hi David,
Stress is a major factor in flaring up the dermatitis on my scalp - last year was a rough year but all on track now.
However the dermatitis seems to flare up at the slightest moment of stress which is just ridiculous,
i'm tired of the flakiness the itching and redness. When it flares up red I use Elecon lotion
and it clears it up within a day.
Its very unfortunate that I cant use hair products, such as curling products, gels, hairspray....nothing...and
yet when I colour my hair I dont react...i think i only have ever reacted once. The fragrance in these
products set it off too.
A major concern is also the amount of hair loss on top of polycystic ovarian syndrome,
but I would say at the moment its because of the dermatitis, I know this could be controlled if the dermatitis was controlled.
I would be grateful if you could recommend a product or treatment that could be used.
Also is there an everyday shampoo and conditioner I could use,
I have heard of the EGO range...what is your opinion on those products?
ANSWERS:
Our Psorexederm scalp lotion will usually clear up scalp dermatitis
with daily application and morning washing out for about 14 days or until controlled.
It is then important to wash your hair between 4-7 times a week with a good shampoo and conditioner.
There are many, however the EGO SEBITAR shampoo and conditioner are ideal.
Washing your hair this often will also help your hair loss as it reduces hormone buildup
on your scalp from the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome(PCOS).
Don't worry if you notice some hair loss when you wash your hair this often at the start of treatment.
This is usually just hair stuck in the dermatitis scales and will soon cease.
Once your scalp is back to normal you may wish to consider using Rogaine 5% hair regrowth lotion daily
on areas that have lost hair from the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
Note: the men's lotion is 5% and the women's is 2% , I would use the men's sparingly for the simple
reason of economy.
I feel the two versions of the same product is more a marketing tactic than a legitimate need to use a
lower strength lotion.
Minoxidil (in Rogaine) has almost no side-effects used as directed.
Excessive use or use on broken skin may allow enough to be absorbed into the body to cause headache or dizziness but
you need to apply a lot!
So in summary,
- control the dermatitis
- then use the Rogaine to reestablish your hair which will take about 6 months and due to your condition maybe ongoing.
A note of interest:
We do a lot of compounding of medications in our pharmacy as well as the products on the site and
we make Minoxidil Lotion 5% much cheaper than Rogaine brand should you decide to use it later on.
Our product comes with a dropper while Rogaine can be obtained as a spray, but the savings are worthwhile.
As I am off to Tasmania for 1 weeks holiday I will be back on Tuesday 21st of January should you wish to contact me again.
Kind Regards,
David Hosking.
