Q&A - Treating Balanitis a inflammation of the head of the uncircumcised penis

Subject: balanitis (balanitis condition I have on the penis)

Hi,

I am inquiring to find out if you have a recommendation for a balanitis condition
I have on the penis. I've seen three different dermologists and the best they could
come up with for treatment is to not wash the area and try and keep it dry.

This has helped but it has never healed completely. Antifungal treatment did not help.

I believe the cause may be due to soap irritation. I read that a sorbolene/glycerine
product may be good for cleansing the area and I wonder if the penis not being cleaned
is allowing the balanitis to stick around?

Maybe one of your cleansing product could be helpful?

Thanks,

Hi ,

I can offer some advice for you that should be successful.

Balanitis is inflammation of the head of the uncircumcised penis and should first be checked to ensure no infection is present.

Washing the head of the penis should be with a non-irritant soap substitute such as sorbolene cream which is applied then simply washed off daily.

The area should be well dried then a water proof emollient applied between the head of the penis and the foreskin. Our Hypoallergenic Face and Body Balm is ideal for this and contains a mild disinfectant.

For severe and recurring Balanitis our zinc based Nappy rash cream can be used instead of the hypo allergenic balm although it is white in color the zinc base is very soothing.

Personally, for persistent and recurring balanitis that does not respond to antifungals, I would use the sorbolene to wash the area then after drying use the Nappy Rash cream as I am certain you will get rapid relief with it.

Once the problem has cleared, keep using the sorbolene daily and apply the nappy cream to the head of the penis ,say, once a week then adjust to suit yourself.

None of these treatments sting and work by simple cleaning, disinfection and protection with either the balm or the nappy cream both of which contain no water so protect the area and provide unsuitable conditions for the problem to recur.

As I occasionally have treated this condition I will deidentify the information and add it to the website for the benefit of others.

Hope this helps,

Kind Regards,
David Hosking.
