Hi ,

Internal medication for Tinea Corpis is available on prescription but is expensive and limited to treating only some of the fungi that can cause tinea corpis.

Typical fungi that can be treated are:
  • Candida albicans and related species, causing candidiasis of skin, mucous membranes and nails
  • Dermatophytic moulds belonging to the genera Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton which cause ringworm or tinea of the scalp, hairless skin and nails
  • Malassezia furfur, a lipophilic yeast responsible for pityriasis versicolor, follicular pityriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and pityriasis capitis (severe dandruff)
  • Normally your Doctor would take a skin scraping and send it off to test which antifungal tablet or capsule the organism is sensitive to.
Then you would need to take that medication for anywhere from 6 weeks to 12 months depending on the medication and whether the nails are involved which takes longer to correct. Some examples of medication are griseofulvin, ketoconazole, fluconazole, itraconazole and terbinafine.

There is the real problem that your fungal infection (Tinea Corpis is a fungal infection as you are aware) may not be sensitive to the antifungal medicines that can be taken internally.

If this is the case, external treatment such as our Tinea Cream can work but will take 3-4 weeks at least with morning and evening applications.

The cheapest internal medication is Griseofulvin combined with an external product such as our Tinea Ointment or a commercial product an imidazole antifungal such as Daktarin cream or Canesten cream.

The dose of Griseofulvin is 500 mg/day until cure (4-6 weeks) according to the literature, however in my experience longer treatment may be needed.

I hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
David Hosking.

My symtoms suggest that I have a bad case of Ringworm (Tinea Corporus),it has infected my trunk area, my upper back, my right hand and wrist, both feet, my chin, and various spots on my face and head. Every time I have tried to kill these spots,it shows up somewhere else. Is there something that will kill it from the inside, and not cost a fortune that my HMO "will" cover.
